What are Decoration Gates?
Decoration Gates are a unique mechanic in Sell Lemons where important upgrade buttons are hidden behind cosmetic decoration purchases. When you buy certain decorations (walls, roofs, floors), new upgrade buttons are revealed that weren't visible before. This means skipping cosmetics isn't just about missing visual customization — it can actually halt your progression entirely.
How It Works
Some upgrade buttons are invisible until you purchase the decoration that gates them.
Decorations include walls, roofs, floors, fences, and signs. Not all decorations gate upgrades, but many do.
After purchasing the required decoration, the hidden upgrade button appears in the relevant area.
This mechanic exists at every stage of the game — from the Lemon Stand to Hill Expansion.
Some of the most powerful upgrades in the game are hidden behind decoration gates.
Common Decoration Gates
Stand Area Walls
Early game walls at the Lemon Stand often reveal upgrade buttons for Juicer levels and cash multipliers.
Roof & Floor Upgrades
Purchasing specific roof and floor decorations can reveal automation and efficiency upgrades.
Hill Area Decorations
The larger Hill Expansion area has more decorations — and more hidden gates. Check thoroughly after each expansion layer.
Sewer Area Decorations
Hidden area decorations may gate some of the most powerful endgame upgrades.
Tips
When progression stalls, buy every available decoration. You're likely missing a hidden upgrade.
After each decoration purchase, scan the area for new buttons. They can appear in unexpected locations.
Never skip cosmetic purchases to save money. The hidden upgrades behind them are always worth more than the decoration cost.
